Kalathas
Kalathas is a small natural bay at Akrotiri peninsula, on the north west of Chania, around 8 km from the city of Chania and almost a 6 km distance from the International Airport of Chania. Kalathas maintains its residential character and beauty. It differs from typical tourist destinations with large hotel complexes, clubs and souvenir shops.
It is a peaceful and quiet resort, with 2 mini markets and 2 restaurants. However at 2kms from Kalathas, in the neighboring village Kounoupidiana there is everything you may need ie supermarkets, banks, pharmacies, doctors, gyms, gas stations, pastry shops etc as well as the Technical University of Crete.
Kalathas features a unique sandy beach with a picturesque island where you can swim and dive. It offers its visitors the chance to relax and enjoy the sun and sea but also do water sports such as canoeing, sup and windsurfing.
The beach of Kalathas is amazing but you can always go down the road and enjoy your swim at Stavros, a lagoon style sandy beach surrounded by mountains, famous from the film "Zorbas the Greek" with Anthony Queen. At a short drive from Kalathas, you can swim at Marathi and the tropical Seitan limani beach.
Kalathas is also very close to Venizelos Graves with a panoramic view of the city of Chania, the Monastery of Agia Triada dated from the 16th century as well as the Monastery and caves of Gouverneto for those who love to exploit the beauty of Cretan nature.
For athletes in shooting, the National Shooting Club is just 4 kms from Kalathas.
